two months of sculpting progress

for a long time, i have wanted to pick up 3d sculpting but just haven’t gotten around to it. however, exactly two months ago, i started practicing sculpting human heads using zbrush.

this is the progress so far! the head on the left was sculpted on 14/3/2024, and the one on the right was finished on 14/5/2024. i think the difference is quite noticeable, crazy to think that both were sculpted by me.

here are some of the heads, in chronological order, that i sculpted over the two months. one of the best resources i had to learn from was the lessons from laura gallagher at outgang. i started watching the lessons right around the time i sculpted the 4th head.

the details on the skin were created with many layers of the zbrush noise maker, and they were surprisingly easy to create! sculpting the correct proportions is the hard part, and that is something i’m still not 100% confident in, but in the last two months, i have gotten a lot better with them!

lastly, here is a quick sketchfab preview. the head in this is not the sculpt, but a quick bake of it.

helpful resources for learning:

https://outgang.studio/
many lessons on anatomy, character art, sculpting, and zbrush. totally worth the price! also during the lessons you will be given many great resources to use.

https://www.anatomystandard.com/
great website to study the shape of the skull, and understand a bit about what is happening under the skin! really helped me understand where all of the volume comes from.

https://anatomy4sculptors.com/anatomy-of-facial-expression/
also the book “anatomy of facial expression”! had a lot of great images showcasing the bones, and muscles under the skin.

these were priceless resources for learning head sculpting!
